Wake County operates comprehensive solid waste and recycling facilities, including the South Wake Landfill in Apex and multiple regional convenience centers, with strict guidelines for construction and demolition (C&D) debris.

1. Mandatory C&D Material Sorting

To reduce landfill volume and maximize resource recovery across the Triangle, specific materials are separated for dedicated recycling:

• Clean Untreated Wood & Framing Lumber: Chipped and processed into landscape mulch or industrial biomass fuel.
• Concrete & Masonry: Crushed into aggregate base material for North Carolina road construction projects.
• Cardboard & Metal Scrap: 100% diverted into industrial smelting and paper recycling streams.

2. Prohibited Hazardous Items

Wet paint cans, liquid solvents, automobile batteries, propane tanks, freon appliances, and asbestos are strictly prohibited in all roll-offs under NC DEQ regulations.
